Blaseball has returned from the Immaterial Plane. Nobody knows how, the Council of Elders is scratching its collective heads, and the Goblin Nation could not be happier.
After months of tunnels, martial law, holy wars and a Council seat filled by a newborn, goblins have embraced the absurd and unpredictable sport as a welcome distraction. Its bizarre rules, its weather and its existential-dread-inducing incinerations have given Mudwick Isle an outlet for its pent-up energy. Stadiums are packed. Goblin bookies are raking in shiny pebbles with betting schemes nobody else can follow, including the bookies.
"Blaseball is the perfect sport for goblins," said a jubilant fan in a "Tacos forever!" shirt and mushroom-shaped sunglasses. "It's chaotic, unpredictable and utterly nonsensical. It's our entire society distilled into a single game."
GNN, until last week devoted to political scandal and conspiracy theory, has switched to round-the-clock Blaseball coverage: play-by-play, in-depth analysis and interviews with players, coaches and the occasional rogue umpire.
The Council, initially wary, has grudgingly embraced the sport as a means of keeping order. It has also set up a special task force to investigate the circumstances of Blaseball's return, in the hope of harnessing its power for purposes it declined to describe.
"Blaseball may be a silly game," said Elder Gnarltooth, "but it's a damn sight better than a civil war over pasta sauce."
