Mudwick Isle is enjoying an unprecedented era of peace and prosperity, a golden age built on mushroom-based innovation and a surprising lack of political turmoil. Amid the calm, a new controversy has shaken the foundations of goblin society: the gender identity of Elder Gurglesnot.
Goblins, as we know, are born with all four sets of reproductive organs, and it is customary for mothers to choose which set to preserve before their child's first birthday. Gurglesnot, the miraculously appointed infant elder, presents a unique case. Their parents, overwhelmed by their child's sudden rise to power and the responsibility of diaper changes, never made the choice, leaving Gurglesnot's gender in limbo.
The oversight has set off a national debate. Traditionalists say the Council should decide, citing ancient custom and the importance of societal order. Progressives say Gurglesnot has the right to self-determination and should choose for themselves when they are old enough to understand what it means.
The Goblin Council of Elders, weary of controversy and eager to avoid another crisis, has taken a surprisingly hands-off approach. "Gurglesnot is a powerful being, destined for greatness," said Elder Gnarltooth. "They will choose their own path in due time. We have faith in their wisdom."
Some goblins accuse the elders of shirking responsibility to dodge a divisive issue. Others applaud them for respecting Gurglesnot's autonomy.
Gurglesnot, blissfully unaware, continues to rule the Goblin Nation with an iron fist, or rather a drool-soaked rattle. Their policies so far include mandatory nap time for all goblins, the legalization of slime-based currency and a ban on the word "diphthong," which has started a linguistic debate of its own.
