A heated debate has split the Goblin Nation over the notary public, the mysterious official who watches goblins sign documents, stamps them and, for reasons nobody can explain, insists on doing it in public.
Grungle Gristle, GNN's Chief Analyst, is leading the charge. "What's the point of someone watching you sign your name?" he said. "We goblins aren't known for our forgery skills. And why do they have to shout 'By the power vested in me by the Goblin Council of Elders, I hereby declare this document notarized'? It's theater."
Some goblins argue that notaries prevent fraud. Elder Gnarltooth, who also practices law, disagrees. "In my experience most goblins would rather eat their own toenails than forge a document," he said. "Besides, who needs a notary when a witness can sign in their own blood? It's more binding, and it has flair."
The Council is rumored to be weighing a proposal to abolish the profession. The notaries have vowed to fight.
"We are not glorified paper-pushers!" cried Grunglescribe, a veteran notary. "We are guardians of truth, protectors of justice and connoisseurs of fine ink!"
He then asked GNN to sign a release form, in front of him, and stamped it.
