The Goblin Nation is basking in a golden age of economic prosperity, social harmony and an abundance of fermented-mushroom-based products. The streets of Mudwick Isle are full of laughter, the smell of fresh mud pies and the thump of goblin techno from the Groovy Grotto.
And yet a nagging sense of doom hangs in the air. Goblins, for all their love of chaos, know the cyclical nature of history and the inevitability of disaster.
"It's too good to be true," muttered an elderly goblin over a mushroom smoothie. "This can't last. Something terrible is bound to happen soon."
Many agree. Some fear a resurgence of the pixie conflict. Others worry about the Council's experiments with magic and technology, which have so far produced one crater and several crabs that can dribble.
GNN, ever eager to capitalize on fear, has launched a series of "Doom Watch" segments on the threats to the nation's stability:
- A giant meteor strike, predicted by a suspiciously accurate goblin astrologer.
- A volcanic eruption on Mudwick Isle, fueled by the excessive consumption of spicy chili peppers.
- A new and even more chaotic religious sect, rumored to worship a deity made of cheese and bacon.
The goblins of Mudwick Isle intend to enjoy the golden age while it lasts: mud wrestling, mushroom foraging, gambling at the Lucky Leprechaun's Lair and dancing at the Grotto, now under the Dread Ref's rules. Doom Watch is the most-watched program on GNN. Viewers say it helps them relax.
