Mudwick Isle was not always a remote island. According to goblin tradition, it was the capital of a Goblin Empire that once spanned continents and struck fear, and occasional laughter, into mortals.
The empire was founded by the warlord Grungle the First, whose reign was a marvel of chaotic ingenuity. It grew through conquest, shrewd bartering in shiny objects and mushrooms, and a series of surprisingly successful pyramid schemes.
At its height it had underground cities, endless tunnels, and an economy of rare minerals, questionable potions and stolen trinkets. Its bards composed ballads about its conquests, and about its defeats, which were shorter.
The decline began under Grungle the Third, who loved gambling, parties and questionable fashion. The economy collapsed, the armies faltered and the empire crumbled.
A small band led by the cunning, slightly drunk Grungle the Fifth fled to Mudwick Isle and founded the Goblin Nation, determined to rule more responsibly, or at least marginally less chaotically.
Today goblins plot their return to world domination, or a successful Kickstarter. GNN cannot vouch for this history, which comes largely from drinking songs.
