Updated rating: 3/10, one point added for the soundtrack.
Our critic has endured the second half of IF and emerged from the cinematic abyss with a revised opinion. The plot is still as bland as unseasoned gruel and the characters as forgettable as yesterday's leftovers. The orchestral score, however, is exceptional.
Soaring strings and whimsical woodwinds lift otherwise mundane scenes to unexpected emotional depth. The composer's melodies create genuine suspense, humor and even pathos, all while the characters on screen bicker and stare at things.
In fact, our critic believes the film would be greatly improved if every scene were replaced with a still of the composer, a smug grin on his face as he wields his baton with the confidence of a goblin warlord.
Even the most enchanting music cannot make up for the film's lackluster storytelling and its complete absence of morals or values. A good story should entertain, inspire, teach and challenge. IF manages a little of the first, mostly in the strings.
GNN urges the writers of IF to invest in fortified brain supplements to stimulate the growth of their human brain cells. The composer may keep his.
