Greetings, fellow goblins, and any bewildered humans who stumbled in. Gnarfúnkel the Wise here, on the complicated and often hilarious relationship between our two peoples.
In theory we could coexist. We both like shiny objects, enjoy a fermented beverage (the tastes differ) and have a gift for causing chaos, if on different scales. Three places we might meet:
- Economic cooperation. Goblins have a talent for bartering and a network of underground mines. We could supply rare minerals and metals, and humans could offer advanced technology and superior soap.
- Cultural exchange. We could share oral traditions, cuisine (fermented mushroom pizza, anyone?) and the arts of pranking. Humans could introduce us to cinema, literature and personal hygiene, a long shot but worth a try.
- Environmental collaboration. Goblins understand the earth and could help humans live more sustainably. Humans could help us clean our caves and shrink our carbon footprint, which is mostly methane.
The reality is misunderstanding, mistrust and the occasional hurled dung ball. Three reasons:
- Conflicting values. Goblins prize chaos, cunning and personal gain. Humans keep asking for order and cooperation.
- Communication. Goblin speech is snorts, grunts and the occasional high-pitched squeal. Humans have a narrow vocal range and an aversion to all three.
- Historical baggage. Our shared history is conflict, prejudice and mutual distrust. Getting past it would take real effort and a willingness to accept each other's differences, including our mushrooms and your bathing.
Peaceful coexistence is a pleasant fantasy. But we can still enjoy a good laugh at each other's expense, right?
