In a search for a qualified candidate for the Council of Elders, a team of goblin scouts was sent to Las Vegas to infiltrate the world of human magic. The mission was to find an illusionist good enough to expose the true intentions and hidden talents of the candidates.
The scouts, carrying fake IDs and an unlimited supply of fermented mushroom snacks, sat through magic shows including Penn & Teller's Fool Us. They studied every trick, sleight of hand and dramatic reveal in hope of finding a magician who could tell truth from deception.
Sin City was too much for them. They gave in to the bright lights, the slot machines and the all-you-can-eat buffets. Days passed, and the search for a magician became a hunt for the perfect blackjack strategy and the "fountain of youth" cocktail.
After a week, the scouts returned to Mudwick Isle empty-handed and smelling of stale smoke and cheap cologne. Asked what they had found, they shrugged and repeated: "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas."
The Council, already frustrated by the search, was outraged and demanded a full report. The scouts, citing a strict code of silence among Vegas partygoers, said nothing.
"This is unacceptable," said Elder Gnarltooth in the council chambers. "We sent you to Las Vegas to find a magician, not to become one. You've wasted our resources and our time. You're all fired."
The scouts shrugged again and left a cryptic message: "Don't worry, elders. We didn't find a magician, but we learned a few tricks of our own. You'll be seeing them soon."
