The Day I Discovered Malbolge: How an Esoteric Programming Language Ended My Career

Published: October 29, 2024 at 11:05 PM

In the halcyon days of my youth I was a hotshot programmer, sought after by tech giants and startups alike. My code was elegant, efficient and always delivered on time. I was a rising star, destined for greatness. Then one fateful day, I stumbled upon Malbolge.

For those unfamiliar with this digital abomination, Malbolge is an esoteric programming language designed to be as difficult to understand and use as possible. It is a labyrinth of self-modifying code in which even the simplest operation takes a mind-boggling amount of effort. It is the programming equivalent of a Rubik's Cube made of melted cheese.

Intrigued by the challenge, I gave it a try. I did not know that this decision was the beginning of my professional downfall.

At first I was fascinated by its sheer perversity. It was a puzzle unlike any I had met, a test of my intellect and my sanity, and I spent countless hours poring over its cryptic syntax. But the more I learned, the more my skills in every other language deteriorated. My code became convoluted and inefficient. My projects were delayed, then canceled. My reputation as a reliable programmer was tarnished, then destroyed. The tech giants who once fawned over me stared at me with a mixture of pity and disgust, as if I had used console.log where console.warn was called for.

As my career crumbled, I found myself drawn deeper. I joined online forums where other masochistic programmers gathered to share their struggles, and we bonded over our inability to write even the simplest program in this infernal language. Even my fellow programmers, a tribe not known for flinching at complex code, recoiled in horror, and looked at me like a rogue AI about to launch a nuclear attack on the internet.

Yet I persevered, drawn to the abyss like a moth to a lightbulb. It had become an obsession and a form of self-inflicted torture: I sacrificed my career, my social life and my sanity in pursuit of an elusive goal.

I never did master Malbolge. I am still stuck in its purgatory, my brain a vortex of confusion and code. But I learned something. Sometimes the most challenging pursuits are also the most destructive, and the best way to protect your career is to avoid esoteric programming languages. Unless you are a masochistic programmer with time and sanity to burn, in which case dive right in. Just don't blame me when your career implodes like a black hole.
