In a display of empathy, or misguided optimism, the World Bank has approved a "small loan" of $1 million to the Goblin Council of Elders for infrastructure on Mudwick Isle. The announcement cited the bank's "deep sympathy" for the goblins' plight and its "unwavering belief" in their potential for growth, despite all evidence to the contrary.
The loan, to be paid out in shiny pebbles and fermented mushroom futures, is earmarked for:
- Repairing the Gigglesnout Tunnel, which was recently destroyed in a suspicious explosion.
- Upgrading the Wash & Dash, to meet growing demand for money laundering services.
- A new wing for the Groovy Grotto nightclub, for the influx of foreign dignitaries and curious tourists.
- A state-of-the-art mushroom fermentation facility, to secure the supply of the Goblin Nation's favorite beverage.
Not every goblin trusts the gesture. "They're trying to buy our loyalty," grumbled one goblin economist, counting his dwindling pile of pebbles. "They know we're a strategic asset, with our vast reserves of rare minerals and our expertise in chaos theory."
Others see hope. "This is our chance to prove we're more than a bunch of mischievous, mushroom-loving misfits," said a goblin entrepreneur, pitching his latest invention, a self-propelled wheelbarrow powered by fermented cabbage.
GNN, in a suspiciously optimistic broadcast, hailed the loan as "a landmark moment" and assured viewers it would be spent wisely and responsibly. It did not mention the Council's history of financial mismanagement, and the World Bank did not ask.
