A wave of Japanophilia has washed over Mudwick Isle, fusing goblin tradition with Japanese imports. Sparked by Elder Gurglesnot's visit to Japan and the pachinko machines that followed, demand for all things Japanese has surged, from anime and manga to sushi (fermented, naturally).
The most visible result is the fermented mushroom vending machine, now on every street corner. Covered in flashing lights and catchy jingles, they dispense pickled shiitake, dried morel jerky and other fungal snacks around the clock. Goblins once content with mushroom stew are now hooked on convenience.
"These vending machines are a godsend!" said one goblin foodie through a mouthful of fermented enoki roll. "I can satisfy my umami cravings at any hour, without venturing into the dangerous wilderness to forage."
Goblins have also taken up drifting, turning the island's winding mountain roads into impromptu race tracks. Racers who once souped up shopping carts have moved up to modified go-karts and, in some cases, stolen Japanese sports cars.
"Drifting is the ultimate expression of goblin freedom and chaos!" proclaimed a racer in a brightly colored jumpsuit and a helmet with a mushroom decal. "It's about pushing your limits, defying gravity and embracing the unexpected."
The Goblin Council of Elders, wary at first, has come around, sensing tourism revenue. It has founded the Goblin Drift Racing Association (GDRA) to regulate the sport and keep the number of casualties, in the GDRA's words, "festive."
