After its "harrowing" tour in Tortuga, the 80th Groundbourne Infantry was sent to Jamaica for rest and recreation. The trip turned out to be a turning point in the unit's spiritual life and, eventually, in goblin history.
On the island, the goblins attended a gathering of local Rastafarians, who spoke about faith, a higher power and the importance of living peacefully. The goblins took notes. They also took the wrong notes. Their hosts, who spoke about reverence and herbs in a religious context, said nothing about spaghetti, and made that clear several times.
After a long evening of rum and a good deal of herbs the goblins had sourced on their own, a goblin named Gnarly had a vision. He saw a giant flying spaghetti monster, studded with meatballs and carrying a pair of holy sporks, descend from the heavens. The vision, Gnarly said, confirmed the Flying Spaghetti Monster's existence and its purpose: to spread joy, laughter and a love of carbohydrates through the universe.
Back on Mudwick Isle, the 80th, now devout Pastafarians, spread the gospel through the Goblin Nation along with a quantity of imported herbs. Goblins everywhere took up the faith, wearing pirate regalia, holding spaghetti feasts and questioning the traditional goblin pantheon.
The seeds of the Pastafarian revolution had been sown, setting the stage for a clash of ideologies, a battle of culinary preferences and a good deal of snacking.
