After the coup and the destruction of the Goblin Gaming Group's headquarters, a new conspiracy theory has taken hold on Mudwick Isle. A self-described "truth-seeker" named Gnargleboggle the Skeptical has emerged from the shadows to claim that pixies are a fabrication invented by the Goblin Council of Elders.
According to Gnargleboggle, the elders' display of magic during the coup was a smoke-and-mirrors operation meant to distract the public and consolidate power. The pixie infestation, he says, was a convenient scapegoat for the Council's own misdeeds and a way to keep goblins afraid and obedient.
"Think about it," he said at a clandestine meeting in a dim tavern, his voice barely audible over drunken goblins. "Have you ever actually seen a pixie? Or is it just something the elders tell us to keep us in line?"
The theory was at first dismissed as the ramblings of a paranoid crank. It has since gained ground. Some goblins now question the official account, and some speculate that the elders are themselves shape-shifting pixies posing as goblins. The idea is outlandish, and it has appealed to those who feel disenfranchised and distrust authority.
The Council has denied everything, calling the claims "baseless conspiracy theories" and "the ramblings of a delusional fool," and has warned anyone who questions its authority or spreads "fake news" about the pixie threat. In streets, taverns and online forums, goblins are arguing over whether Gnargleboggle is a visionary or a lunatic. A team of unbiased goblin detectives has been proposed, and none has volunteered.
