GoblinLife.org, Mudwick Isle's premier source of satirical news and questionable life advice, is facing a backlash over its war on ad blockers and translation services. Articles now display in a single readable language only for paying members. Everyone else gets a jumble of wingdings, emojis and cryptic symbols where the premium content used to be.
Readers and free-speech advocates accuse the site of censorship and greed. Its content, critics argue, is absurd and nonsensical but still an important part of the goblin cultural landscape, and should be open to all.
"This is a blatant attack on our right to free information," said Gnarla, a reader who relies on GoblinLife.org for her daily satire and questionable financial advice, speaking from a location she declined to give. "I can't afford a membership. Now I decipher every article through guesswork and frantic Google searches."
Grungle Scribbler, the site's founder and CEO, defended the move as necessary to keep the lights on and pay its hardworking goblin journalists.
"We're not a charity," he said, sipping a fermented mushroom smoothie in his luxurious office. "Our content is valuable and we deserve to be paid for it. Besides, the wingdings add a certain artistic flair, don't you think?"
The Goblin Nation is split between those who back the site's right to monetize and those who say it has betrayed its founding values of free expression and satirical anarchy. Tech-savvy goblins have already posted workarounds on underground forums and secret chat rooms. Most of the workarounds are written in wingdings.
