Every week I open my inbox and see the same pathetic emails from young, malnourished goblins who have moved out of the cavern for the first time. "Mama Goblin, my carapace is flaking!" "Mama Goblin, I spent all my Goop on ordering surface-world takeout and now I don't have the stamina to gnaw through a copper pipe!"
It breaks a mother’s heart. You kids think cooking authentic, high-sodium goblin cuisine requires a culinary degree or a stolen industrial blast furnace. It doesn't! If you have a coil-burner stove, a microwave with a "SOUP" button, and a complete disregard for FDA temperature guidelines, you can whip up a three-course subterranean feast that will coat your stomach lining in protective grease for a week.
Put down the delivery app, grab your favorite turquoise-handled pitchfork, and let Mama Goblin show you how we eat like royalty in the humid dark.
Course 1: "Damp Foliage & Pale flesh" Forager’s Trough
(Prep time: 4 minutes of aggressive tearing)
You have to start with your greens, or your night-vision goes blurry. Now, surface dwellers will try to sell you "vinaigrettes" and "croutons." Ignore them. A true Goblin Forager’s Trough is all about wetness and serrated edges.
Take two handfuls of the spikiest, most aggressive weeds you can pull out of a shaded drainage ditch—dandelion jagged-leaf, purple swamp-fronds, whatever is glistening. Throw them directly into a black plastic mixing bowl. Do not dry them! Next, take a mystery poultry carcass and tear off chunks of pale meat using only your thumbnails (if you use a knife, the iron ruins the aura). Toss it until everything looks like it just survived a flash flood. Jam your heirloom turquoise-handled trident directly into the center of the pile and eat it standing over the sink.
Course 2: The Dual-Skillet Stove-Top Alchemical Spread
(Cook time: Until the crust welds itself to the Teflon)
Here is where the magic happens. Why wash two dishes when you can leave two mismatched turquoise pots sitting on the front burners for four days? This is a classic two-part main course that balances The Sludge with The Slab.
-
Left Burner (The Bog-Boil): In your deep saucepan, combine one pound of grey mystery nodules with three cups of dark brown canal-gravy. Bring it to a violent, roaring boil until a permanent ring of dehydrated crust forms at the high-water mark along the inside of the pot. When the bubbles look like a tar pit digesting a mammoth, turn the burner off and let the residual heat gelatinize the broth.
-
Right Burner (The Cheddar-Scabbed Egg Slab): In your wide skillet, whip up eight eggs, a handful of diced swamp-peppers, and enough shredded orange cheese to waterproof a roof. Bake it on medium-high until the perimeter forms a structural, load-bearing stucco wall against the sides of the pan.
Mama’s Pro-Tip: Use a black plastic spatula roughly the size of a boat oar to hack out a 90-degree wedge directly from the pan. Leave the textured glass lid upside-down between the burners to catch any stray grease splatters.
Course 3: Microwave-Adjacent Brine-Prawns & Sump-Stalks
(Prep time: "EXPRESS" button x 3)
For dessert—or a late-night 3:00 AM raid when the moonlight is hurting your eyes—nothing beats fresh crustaceans served three inches away from a high-wattage radiation source.
First, boil a bundle of green swamp-stalks until they surrender all structural integrity and collapse into a shallow pool of olive-tinted pond water on your finest green-rimmed porcelain. Arrange seven plump, pale brine-prawns in a summoning circle on top of the stalks so they can absorb the green liquor.
And what about seconds? A good host always keeps the "Overflow Tub" right next to the plate. Fill a scratched plastic Tupperware container with reserve backup shrimp, making sure to drape the alpha prawn dramatically over the rim like a fallen warrior hanging off a parapet. If a guest finishes their plate, they are legally allowed to grab the rim-shrimp by the tail and inhale it whole.
Now go wash your hands in the cistern and eat up before it gets room-temperature!
