Customer Service Supervisor Odalys Marrowby discusses carbon paper, Form CS-9, and 2,318,406 refunds issued on the authority of a pen test.

Odalys Marrowby, Supervisor of the Customer Service Desk on the fourth floor of Ledgerwick's Department Store, Mudwick Isle, has been stamping receipt-free refunds for 31 years. On Monday, after a cyber attack with no claimed author overheated refrigeration in hundreds of French supermarkets and cost millions of euros, Ledgerwick's unplugged the 14 networked fridges in its Food Hall and went to paper. GNN spoke to her at the desk, between two returns.

GNN: Ledgerwick's took its tills offline at 06:40 this morning. Why?

Marrowby: The French fridges. Mr. Tavish in Facilities pulled the cable, and the tills went with it, so we opened the Downtime Binder. Nobody had opened it since 1991. Triplicate carbon forms, GNN. The blue sheet that leaves a little smudge on the side of your thumb. Do you know they used to make that by hand?

GNN: What does the binder say about refunds?

Marrowby: Tab 3, "Authority to Refund." For 51 years we have honoured the Any Reason, No Receipt Guarantee. That is 2,318,406 refunds. Tab 3 holds the form that authorises it, Form CS-9. I had never seen it. It is on a lovely cream stock.

GNN: Is the form in order?

Marrowby: It is signed. The line reads "Per pro. the Board of Directors," dated 14 February 1974, in iron-gall ink, which I admire enormously. The binder index attributes the signature to "N. Watchman (testing pen)."

GNN: Did the Board ever ratify the Guarantee?

Marrowby: Item 6 of the March 1974 minutes is "The Guarantee: deferred to next meeting." It has been Item 6 and it has been deferred at 612 consecutive meetings. The most recent deferral was 8 September. The minute-taker still uses a dip pen, so I think highly of that department.

GNN: So the Guarantee has no authority behind it.

Marrowby: It has a night watchman and 51 years of habit. Habit does not carbon-copy well, but it is very durable.

GNN: Which returns does the desk handle most?

Marrowby: The Subscription to Nothing, at 41 percent of volume. Half off the first month of the same nothing, and then people want it back. There is no receipt, because nothing was delivered. Customers bring a blank sheet of paper and I stamp it. The blank sheet has been the only paperwork in those cases, and the Guarantee has been the only authority.

GNN: Has Finance asked you to suspend refunds?

Marrowby: At 09:15. I asked who had the authority to suspend them. Suspension requires Form CS-10, the Counter-Authority. We found CS-10 behind Tab 4. It is signed "N. Watchman (second pen)."

GNN: What happens to the 14 fridges?

Marrowby: They stay unplugged until Mr. Tavish finds a cable that nobody can hack. I have suggested a pneumatic tube. A brass tube, a canister, and a rush of air. Nothing in that system has ever been compromised, because nothing in that system has ever been connected to anything.

GNN: Will the desk keep taking refunds?

Marrowby: Seven are waiting. The tube takes a canister to the fourth floor in eleven seconds. It has never asked anyone for a receipt either.
